Inside Lords & Ladies of the Castle

What you’ll discover together

One castle day in the late 1400s, dawn bell to bedtime. You run it together; each page has a true fact and a question.

A noble feast in the great hall: a page washes the child’s hands at the high table while the peacock is carried in

Manners and feasts

Bread Plates and a Peacock

A young page pours water over your child’s hands at the high table. The plates are slabs of stale bread called trenchers, and in comes a peacock wearing its own feathers.

In the busy courtyard the grown-up gives orders to the steward while the child checks the stores against a list

Managing the household

Keys, Stores and Tally Sticks

A castle was a small town to run. Your child carries the keys, counts the stores and splits a tally stick, so both halves prove who owes what.

Below the castle the child takes a hawk on the glove with the falconer, the grown-up close beside, a pony and a lute player nearby

A noble education

Lessons for a Lord’s Child

Noble children learned to ride, hunt with birds and make music. Your child holds a hawk on a thick glove and tries the lute, a word from the Arabic al-ud.

At dusk on the castle walls the grown-up commands the guard while the child helps turn the drawbridge winch as riders approach

Security and defence

Ready for a Royal Visitor

Riders at dusk. Your child helps work the drawbridge winch beside you. In the story, a royal visitor is due at sunset, and heralds greet guests by trumpet.

$54.99

A personalized picture book: your child and you as lord and lady for a day. 30 true castle facts, from tally sticks to the toilet in the wall.

Questions, answered

What will my child learn?

How a noble household ran for one day. Your child meets bread plates called trenchers, a peacock served in its own feathers, tally sticks, shield colors, falcons and lawn chess. They also find the garderobe, a toilet built out from the castle wall. Each page has one true fact and one question about the painting.

Who wears what?

The grown-up is drawn as the castle’s lady or lord, in grand clothes. Your child wears the big plumed red hat and the ermine-trimmed robe on every page.

Is anything scary or rude?

No battles and no siege. It’s a day of castle life with a visitor expected at sunset. The toilet page shows a stone seat with a long drop outside. The joke is where everything went, and it stops there.

Is it historically accurate?

The facts are real. The castle and the story are made up, set in the late 1400s. The clothes are storybook versions of that era’s fashion.

What is this book?

A personalized hardcover picture book about the Middle Ages. Your child and their grown-up are drawn into all 30 story pages, from a knight’s training to castle feasts and village life. Each page is one moment of the story, one true fact and one question your child can answer by looking at the picture.

What age is it for?

Ages 2 to 10. Little ones find themselves in the pictures while you read aloud. Older kids read the facts and answer the questions on their own.

How big is it, and what’s it made of?

A landscape hardcover, 8 × 11 in (21 × 28 cm), with 32 pages: an opening, 30 story pages and a closing. Printed in full color on thick 170 gsm silk paper, with a matte-laminated cover.

What can I personalize?

The child’s photo and name, and the grown-up’s photo and what the child calls them: Grandma, Nana, Dad, Auntie. The names go on the cover, like “Starring Maya & Nana.”

Will the characters really look like us?

Each character is drawn from the photo you upload, so your child will know the faces. A clear, front-facing photo in good light works best. Not happy? Add another photo and preview again, free.

Can I see the book before I buy?

Yes. Add your photos and tap Preview your book. In under a minute you’ll see your cover and a few pages, free. No account, no card, nothing charged until checkout.

Yes. All Cradl books share one cart, so you can mix titles and formats, and every book is the same price: $54.99 for a hardcover and $39.99 for a softcover.

When will it arrive?

Each book is printed close to you: in the US, the UK and Canada for those countries, and in New Zealand for Australia. It arrives in 5 to 7 business days in the US, 4 to 5 in the UK and Canada, and 7 to 12 in Australia.

How are my photos used?

Only to draw the characters in your book. They’re never shared publicly or used in advertising, and they’re automatically deleted 7 days after you upload them.
